HANDWRITING

We are learning about how to write the letters in our full name correctly

Encourage your child to hold the pencil in a pincer grip. Some children may require support holding a pencil correctly. Alternatively, you can use paint brushes, large chunky crayons, chalk and felt pens as an alternative to a pencil. When forming letters support your child in making the correct sequence of movements. A letter formation sheet is available to download. Please help your child start on the dot and follow the direction of the arrow to ensure they form their letters with the correct sequence of movements.

Activities

Letter Formation

Very Easy - Pencil Control activity cards

Easier - My pencil control work book

Harder - Handwriting Practice

Draw lines on a blank piece of paper using a ruler or print out template with lines already on in handwriting folder on school website.

Practice writing their full name making sure an uppercase letter is used for the beginning letter of both names.

MATHS

We are learning to count out and recognise amounts to 5,10 or 20

Activity

Warm up by counting and dancing to a counting in 10s song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYRTtwZGwj8    For pupils confident in counting in 10s move on to the 10 times table:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlVJhAIruCc

Play a game with tens frames together (for beginners use amounts up to three, then five.)

Deal out the tens frames cards showing different amounts face down on the table. You can download them here or easily draw up your own. Take turns to hold up the cards for others to see for a short time then hide it again. The person who did not hold up the card tries to place counters the same as on the card they have seen and say how many. Compare with the tens frame card to check if you were correct.

You can:

Beginner- count out loud whilst placing three corresponding items together eg straws into cups, spoons into bowls, flowers into vases.

Easy- play the game with tens frames showing amounts up to three, then five holding the cards up for longer.

Medium – use tens frames up to 10 and write down the numbers after you’ve counted

Harder – use double tens frames (one below the other) with one of them constantly full to represent amounts 11-20, writing down the number after you’ve counted. Talk about how in the number there is one 10 and however many ones.

Extending Higher Ability Pupils

For higher ability pupils begin working on place value.  Start by saying how many tens and how many ones in amounts to 20 then 50 then 100 (for example in 36 there are 3 tens and 6 ones.)

ENGLISH

We are learning to write for different purposes.

Activity

Today you are going to design a seed or bulb packet.

You need to draw a picture of the plant on the front and colour it in, next you need to write the plant name on the front. On the back you need to write when to plant it, how often to water it and how to look after it.

You can find pictures and information on the internet if you need to or you may have a seed packet at home that will give you some ideas.

Find template for a seed packet/envelope in the English folder in the home learning folder T5 week 2.

Please make sure you leave spaces between words and don’t forget your capital letters.

Parents: Please support with reminding them to leave finger spaces. If your children can’t remember how to form a letter please write this down for them to help them making sure they use lower case and upper case correctly.

SCIENCE-1

We are learning to suggest answers to questions linked to Science.

Activity

Talk about what senses are and that there are 5 of them. Do they know what any of them are?

Watch Senses powerpoint and discuss with your child- find Senses powerpoint in the Science folder in the T5 week 2 home learning folder.

Match the 5 senses to the body parts – find senses matching activity in the Science folder in the T5 week 2 home learning folder.

Challenge

Match the picture to the correct sense- find senses matching activity in the Science folder in the T5 week 2 home learning folder.

Try this fun activity at home

Imagine what it might be like to lose one or more of their senses by wearing a blindfold and trying to eat cereal, blocking their ears and trying to follow to an instruction or holding their nose and eating an apple or onion. Talk about what it feels like to lose a sense

Alternative Activity

Go around the house and garden trying to use all of the different senses to identify different objects- you could involve someone else who lives in the house with you.

Example:

1. Get them to face away from you and make a noise with something in the house and they have to guess  (using the sense to hear) what it is.

2. Have a bag with objects in that they have to put their hand in  (use the sense touch only) to work out what it is.

Take photos of your activity if you can and write down what the questions where and what the answers were.

SCIENCE -2

We are learning to identify and classify (know what things are and possibly put them into groups)

Activity

Watch sense of smell powerpoint. (Adult to read smells investigation sheet if need be)

Have some bowls or cups with different things from around the house and garden in.

Try to not let them see what are in them. Sort them into smells they like and smells they don’t like.

You could write two labels like and don’t like to put the cups or bowls underneath them.

Do they smells remind them of anything or a place or any other thing they can think of?

Can they sort the smells in any other way? Things from the house? Things from the garden?  Smells from school? Smells that remind them of Nanny’s house? See how many different ways they can sort them without prompting them.

Lastly – what is their favourite smell and what one is their least favourite. They could take photos and with support write these down.

Note:

Smell has a strong link to memory and emotion. Explore what memories are evoked by the smells, encouraging children to record their memories in drawing and writing activities. Smells to include could be burnt toast, vinegar, fresh bread, coffee, perfume, orange peel, freshly cut grass, manure, tree bark, sweets, soil, mint and an old smelly sock! Use your imagination… the possibilities are endless!

PHSE

We are learning to be responsible for our environment.

Activity

Today we are thinking about tidying up and making where we go to school or live look good.

Wear gloves to pick up litter, pull out weeds and dig over borders and small patches of earth with support from our adults.

Perhaps plant seeds and bulbs that will flower in the spring so that others may enjoy them if you have any at home. If you don’t have any at home don’t worry- you can draw pictures of flowers and colour them in to put up or print off pictures and attach onto sticks or twigs and put up outside to brighten the area up.

Challenge

Make one for a neighbour or family member and leave it on their wall when you go out for a walk with your family as part of your daily exercise with a note saying why you have done it ( to be kind and make them smile! )  J

FOOD TECH

We are learning to prepare ingredients for cooking

Activity

To begin with gather a variety of fruits and vegetables- Do they know what a fruit is? Do they know what a vegetable is?

Can they sort them into fruits in one pile and vegetables in another?

Today we are going to make a vegetable soup ( with support from an adult) see recipe

It is called ‘

First we are going to wash the vegetables- one at a time put them in a bowl of water in the sink or at the table and scrub them with a scrubbing brush or nail brush.

Next get a chopping board and a knife and chop all of the vegetables into small pieces.

After that find a large saucepan and place all of the ingredients in and bring to the boil then turn down to a simmer and leave for about 20 mins or until the vegetables are soft.

Ask an adult to blend the soup or you can eat it without blending it doesn’t change the taste.

Alternative Activity

Make a different soup on another day – talk about what one was your favourite and why to people in your house.

ART

We are learning how to look closely and carefully to create a piece of Art.

Activity

As we are looking at the topic Scented garden we need to look carefully and closely at a range of flowers, hopefully from your own garden if not from pictures on the internet (See real pictures of flowers in the Art folder in the home learning folder T5 week 2)

If you have a magnifying glass use this or take a photo with an ipad and zoom in to have a really close look!

Now try and draw these flowers from a range of different materials including coloured pencils, chalks, felt pens and crayons on plain paper – try and fill the whole page with your choice of flower- if you have any smelly pens use these to add a sensory dimension to artwork!

Challenge

If you have any modelling material such as clay or play dough have a go at making a flower out of these, take a photo and then roll it back into a ball and make another one.

If you make it from clay you could always paint it once it is dry.

ICT-1

We are learning to use a keyboard on a laptop or ipad to help us with our writing.

Activity

Use a laptop, desk top computer or ipad to practice writing your full name.

Remember that you have to use capital letters for the first letter in your first name leave a space and then a capital letter for the first letter in your last name.

Challenge

Once you have mastered you full name correctly explore with support changing the font, and the size and colour.

ICT-2

We are learning to take a photo and upload it to a program

Activity

Go onto Purple mash on the Ifield website, find topic, then plants, then mashcam then gardener.

Use the gardener mashcam to take your photo and add it to the picture collage. Use the rotation buttons to get the angle correct.

You are now a gardener! Type a statement into the speech bubble about our topic, say why you like to be in the garden or which plants are your favourite.

LIFE SKILLS

We are learning to wash and dry dishes effectively

Activity

Washing dishes and drying up

Preferably after eating some vegetable soup made in Food Tech, wash and dry our dishes following the rules of hygiene, doing this safely and behaving sensibly in the kitchen.

Look at sequencing cards to support the activity in the Life skills folder T5 week 2.

First discuss why we need to use detergent, how much we should use, why we should rinse off the soap, when we might need to rewash the dish rather than putting it away, why we need to be sensible and not splash. Check with the adults in my house after completing task to see if you followed all the rules.

Can they order the washing up sequence card correctly?

Encourage them to do this several times in the week to check if they can remember what to do.

RE

We are learning about the features of a place of worship (Mosque)

Watch the video virtual tour of a mosque https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWi7plHFJI8 to learn about some features (minaret or tower where the call to prayer is broadcast, the washroom and prayer hall) and practices (removing shoes and washing before prayer).

Activity 1

Places of worship worksheet.

Cut and stick labels of the inside of a mosque in the correct place with support- in the RE folder

T5 week 2.

Easy – use the symbols to match the objects in the mosque.

Medium – cut out labels and stick them next to the place.

Harder – use the words on the sheet to write the places correctly in the mosque.

Watch video of the world’s most beautiful mosques, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJEyjE5S6h8

look at these mosques together and choose your favourite. Why do you like it the best?

Art Activity 2

Assemble pre-cut shapes on a chosen background of night sky, sunset or sunny day to collage a mosque. Find template in the RE folder T5 week 2.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

We are learning to use a range of different materials

Children to make (with support) some scented play dough. Use a range of scents such as lavender, basil (grind the basil leaves into a watery paste using a pestle and mortar) rose oil or mint tea to add to the dough mixture. Help to measure out and add the ingredients, mixing and kneading, then play by rolling, squeezing and stretching the dough whilst enjoying its fragrant smell!

(Scented Playdough Recipes) in the DT folder T5 week 2.

Use the playdough to make a nose, eye, ear, tongue and hand to remind them what the 5 senses are.

Challenge

Try and make a favourite flower, plant, fruit or vegetable using the play dough.

Take photographs with an ipad or phone.
