Home Learning Tasks
Hazel, Maple, Oak and Cherry
Week beginning 15th June 2020
Below are some suggestions for home learning activities. Where possible the resources have been provided. We fully understand that you may not have all the resources at home to carry out every task.
Internet Safety
Please make sure your children are supervised when using the internet. The sources below have been checked internally at school. Please check them again before sharing with your children to ensure that your internet settings are blocking any undesirable content.
ENGLISH - READING |
We are learning to read words used in comic books
We are learning to answer questions about a text
Looking at onomatopoeia words that are used in comic books – explain that these words when you read them make the noise that you read.
Bang, snap, oof, boing, thwack, crash, hiss, whizz
Oxford Owl has a range of super hero stories which can be read together or you can ask it to read it aloud:
Remember, Oxford Owl website eBooks to see which ORT level your child can access. They/you should know which level they usually read at school. |
ENGLISH – SPEAKING AND LISTENING AND WRITING |
Re-read their own writing to check that it makes sense.
Continue to write their comic strips reading speech and thought bubbles aloud to see if their story makes sense. Describe to an adult what happens at the beginning, middle and end. You could fold a piece of paper into three and help them to put a simple comic story in order. Ask your child to dictate what is happening and record it in simple language. Ask them to draw a picture to go with each part. Alternatively cut out a speech bubble shape out of paper and print off a superhero image. Examples can be found in week 2 resources folder. What is the superhero saying? Writing Talk to an adult or peer about what they are going to write.
Imagine that an everyday hero could develop superpowers to help them do their work. Consider what those superpowers might be… perhaps a firefighter could shoot water blasts from his wrists, or an air ambulance hero could take off using her very own ankle jets – no helicopter needed! Brainstorm ideas about different emergency services using pictures and photographs for inspiration. Draw or use ICT tools to create a diagram and use captions and labels to annotate their drawing.

PHONICS |
We are learning how to hear sounds in words
Please continue working on letter sounds at home, some links are included below:
Phase 1 – more listening to sounds in the environment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1m4h79JZso
Phase 2 phonics – animations to help learn phase 2 sounds https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcqqtfr
Phase 3 Phonics – work your way through the phase 3 sounds and don’t forget the ‘tricky words’. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvq9bdm
Activity: Beginner- Find objects that make a sound that you have 2 of. Sit your child behind a screen or behind the sofa etc and put out the sound objects in front of them. Sitting out of their sight make a sound with an object. Can they match they object making the sound? Make a sound pattern with your object. Can they echo the sound pattern? Make sure your child knows the names of the objects and then play again this time say the first sound of the object. For example shhhhhhhh can they show you the shaker. Bbbbbb can they show you the bell.
Try this listening game with classroom sounds. You might like to find some of the objects to match to the sounds as they play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVwAvifDARA
Medium-harder: Go for a walk and collect some pebbles. At home wash them and then use a permanent marker to write letter shapes on. If you have lots of pebbles write all 26 letters of the alphabet. If you only have a few pebbles choose a few letters your child is confident of like those in their name and some new sounds. Turn the pebbles over and take turns to turn one over and make the sound you see. You could extend this by making two of each sound to play sound pairs remembering to say the sounds each time you turn them over.
Challenge: Can your child find all the letters they need for their name? Can they make their name? Muddle it up and retry.

HANDWRITING |
We are learning to form letters correctly
Keep encouraging your child to hold the pencil in a pincer grip, using a short ‘chubby’ pencil or marker is a good way to encourage this. Don’t forget that it’s much easier to use a marker than a pencil and easiest of all is a whiteboard and marker as not much pressure is required.
Don’t forget that mark-making can be encouraged in all sorts of exciting ways – fingers in shaving foam, brushes in trays of sand, chunky chalk on the driveway, large paintbrush and bucket of water outside on the concrete on a sunny day, paint pens on the window… get creative!
We are focusing on horizontal and vertical mark making for some, all lower case letters a-z and numbers 1-20. Some new handwriting activities have been added to the Home Learning. Please encourage your child to complete the sheets. (See Term 6 week 3 handwriting folder)
Activities
Beginner – Using paint brushes of different thicknesses and a small bucket of water mark make on the patio, or side of the shed or any other surface where the water leaves a temporary mark. Can they make a wavy line? Can they make a zig zag line etc. Easier- Print off a few copies of letter formation sheet and practice each letter regularly. Insist they hold their pencil or tool correctly and start in the correct place to write each letter. Harder – In the maths folder you will find some handwriting sheets to practice days of the week and months of the year. When complete can they write the words on another piece of paper or paint the words with water on the side of the shed etc.
Challenge- If you didn’t get a chance to do the superhero pencil control sheets you can find them again in this week’s handwriting resource folder. There are also some seasonal handwriting patterns too. |

SCIENCE |
We are learning about the weather:
We can recognise changes across the four seasons and are able to describe weather associated with the seasons including the length of days.
Go outside and have fun with shadows. Make them jump, chase each other and play shadow tag. Draw round them to see if they change during the day.
Watch the interactive Which Season PowerPoint in the science resource file.
Complete the season activities found in the maths resource folder.

FOODTECH |
We are learning more about foods from History.
Christopher Columbus brought back tomatoes to Europe from South America so I thought it would be a good idea to make a simple tomato sauce to learn how to cook a meal for your family.
Activity Use the recipe for Tomato sauce on Twinkl (Find resource in T6 week 3 food tech folder) Make up your own tomato sauceand put it with some pasta for a delicious meal to share with your family (Adult support will be needed when using knives and the cooker)
|
COMPUTING |
We are learning to find information in different places
Use internet search engines to ‘follow’ real-life heroes from organisations such as Mountain Rescue or the RNLI. Select the latest incidents link to ‘observe’ how these amazing people are helping the public numerous times a day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO1uRoqXxd4 watch this video about RNLI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UClBcKfQVIs watch this video about Ambulances

ART |
We are learning to use a range of techniques, making links between other artists and their own work. Look at images on the internet of Superheroes in Art particularly Pop Art. Talk about the colours used. Notice how many of the artists painted in dots instead of solid colours. Draw attention to the fact that they are usually not very detailed or lifelike. They look like cartoons or comic strips. They usually have been drawn in black.
Using a black felt tip pen or pencil draw the outline of their own superhero and then colour it using bold colours and techniques seen online. If they are not confident in drawing their own image they could colour a template found in the Art resource folder in a similar way. They could add comic style words eg Pow Bang etc.

LIFE SKILLS |
We are learning to put on tricky items of clothes
First activity - find a range of different types of clothing from around the house with slightly more tricky fastenings than last week. Make a game where you have 2 piles and you have to run to the next pile and put on an item of clothing before you can run back and put on another item. Continue until all the clothing has been put on and done up. Have this as a game to include the whole family.
Second activity- Continue with trying to sort clothes for different types of weather.
If you have any hula hoops use them or put string down in circle shapes to help sort out clothing for winter and summer. Discuss that sometimes it rains in summer but is still warm too and sometimes it can be sunny in the winter but still cold.
Third activity -Shoelaces- you could do this with real shoes or make a cardboard show that you make holes for the shoelaces and attach an old shoelace for them to practice as often as they can.
See below for instructions- encourage your child to do as much of the making of it as they can – just support where needed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II-v1-DJ9r4
Challenge When you go outside each day for some exercise try and choose what items of clothing you may need to wear- look out of the window to help you decide and then check with your adults as this can be very hard thing to do! |
PHSE |
We are learning to take part in conversations recognising what we like/dislike.
Talk about what the word ‘hero’ means. Discuss the qualities of real-life heroes such as bravery, kindness, determination and generosity. Link this to the people that have been helping us during this Coronavirus time. This activity is best done as a family or small group.
Talk about how they set a good example to others, listening attentively to each other’s opinions in the home. Choose a real-life hero or heroine and discuss in in your family why that person is a hero.
Try and give good reasons to support their argument.
A suggestion would be a nurse or doctor male or female.
Use a picture from the PHSE home learning folder to write around the qualities and then at the bottom say if you like or dislike and give a reason. There is a mixture of people who help us- choose as many as you would like to do.
Either write down your reasons or get an adult to support you to write. You could also verbally say why and ask the adult to write it down for you. You could also discuss why and if we should all be more like this.

SENSORY |
Watch images of superheroes moving around building and moving objects.
Pretend to be a super hero on a scooter board or lying on a skateboard
Acting /dancing dynamic words such as fly, dash, zoom, glide through the big elastic.
Have a bag of cotton wool balls ( clouds) that they have to find a matching superhero toys or pictures hidden in the bag with the ‘cloud’.
Have water in a shallow tray that they have fish out small toys using a sieve, fly swat or small net.
Could also put foam numbers or letters in here too. Some Superheroes turn things to ice. Freeze small world figures eg Lego people or small superhero toys in cups of water. Turn the ice out onto a tray and watch it melt. Can they make it melt faster?
