9: 30 Adult directed Activity: Rainforest

This week we will be exploring the Rainforest element of the island looking at different animals that live in the rainforest through the story ‘Roaming in the rainforest’

Watch audio version on YouTube of ‘Roaming in the rainforest or you can read the story If you have it at home. Pupils could also engage with telling the story using a selection of different animals you may have at home, or by using the rainforest puppet resource provided.

What animals did you see that live in the rainforest? Look at the range of animals from the story can pupils name them? /describe them?/hold choice of 2 up and distinguish correct animal. Use rainforest word mat and stick puppets.

What do you think the weather/climate might be like in the rainforest? Linking back to last week looking at weather and climate?

Pupils to engage with making a paper plate bird from rainforest, using all different colours think about where the bird might live in the rainforest, down on the ground? Or up in the trees? Resource on home learning.

10:30 – Have a snack and read a story or listen to rainforest song on you tube.

11:00- 12:00 – Child initiated time, pupils are to play with toys or educational games on the computer. Adults are to support their use of ICT skills through the use of accessing a printer, using a mouse and keyboard to write names and words or to play simple educational games (ICTgames.com). If playing with toys, adults are to encourage narrative in pupils play and developing speaking and listening skills by hiding and finding toys.

Focused activity: Phonics – phase 2

Listen to jolly phonics songs phase two, blending song and trick word song 2 on YouTube. Use phonic cards to play matching memory game or snap. Practice name writing and letter formation of the alphabet. Play phase two phonics game on Phonicsplay.com. Complete phonics colouring sheet on school website.  Begin to work on letter formation booklet.

Engage in sound bag activity, collect a range of instruments and develop sound recognition supporting phase 1 phonics explore sounds at first and different volumes of sound for engagement. Then develop sound recognition by identifying the instrument just by sound. Links to sound bag and instrument cards resource for instructions.

Pupils to engage with animal boogie song on you tube this is a familiar favourite with cedar class and links with this week’s topic. Pupils to move like all the different animals to the music.

Pupils to engage in making a rain maker to think about what the rainforest might sound like and play their instrument along with the music imagining they are animals in the rain forest.

Think about sound, play your rain maker fast and slow, Loud or quiet.

9:30 Adult directed Activity: Maths  counting and number

This week engage with practising counting skills, counting animals from the rainforest completing I spy rainforest game and check list to write down how many animals you can find. Resources for counting up to 10 or 20 animals provided.

Engage in variety of number songs focusing on numbers 1 to 5 , five little speckled frogs links with topic this week to develop counting skills and engagement in number.  Hiding numbers in the garden or sensory materials like sand or shaving foam and trying to find them, what number is it? Developing recognition.

A counting number puzzle game has been provided to work on to develop number correspondence skills, matching numbers to quantity.

A number formation booklet resource has been provided to continue to develop number formation skills over the coming weeks.

For sensory mark making ideas a colour sensory bag instructions have been included which can be used to mark make on, write numbers, write letters, you can use a mixture of colours in 1 bag as instructions suggest or have all different coloured bags which will also develop colour recognition skills, you could add glitter or different shiny objects to make it more sensory to develop mark making and motor skills. These can be kept and continued to use.

From the resources collected last week make your rainforest picture, using sticks, leaves flowers, you can try to make some animals to add to your picture also.  Take photos of your picture and nature hunt so we can see what you have explored.

Imagine you are an explorer in the rainforest, what can you find following the Poster instructions and looking at the a4 poster picture of the rainforest.

Reflecting on learning this week can you answer any of the questions provided?

As an explorer of the rainforest what might you hear? Is it hot or cold? How do you feel in the rainforest?

When you go for your walk today imagine you are an explorer in the rainforest what do you see, smell, and hear? Can you dress up like an explorer for the day?
